Benefits of Travelling Solo

Sometimes we don’t always have someone to travel with and the prospect of travelling solo can be a scary but exhilarating idea. Exploring the world alone can open up a whole new way of embracing yourself, learning about yourself and others, and improving your confidence. Here are some great reasons why you should take that trip by yourself!

Complete Freedom

When you travel with a companion, you sometimes have to make compromises which could mean missing out on something you had really wanted to see or do. Travelling solo means you can do what you want, whenever you want to do it. You don’t have to consider what others want to do and miss out as a result, including if you want to rest without feeling guilty!

TIP: Plan a basic itinerary or join a tour with plenty of leisure time. This will give our trip some structure as well as time to explore at your own pace.

Make new friends

Sometimes (especially if we are introverted) if we don’t have to put ourselves out there, we simply won’t do it. If you already have a travel companion you have already got someone to go to a bar with or sightseeing. And it’s such a shame… just think of all the incredible people you could be meeting. Travelling solo forces you out of your comfort zone to meet and interact with people you might not otherwise have spoken with. It will also help you build confidence around others.

TIP: Join a tour – whether it’s over a number of days or a one off sightseeing tour – and you’ll be able to meet like-minded explorers that you can meet up with later for dinner or drinks!

Become comfortable in yourself

The idea of doing things by yourself can make some people nervous, but it shouldn’t! Having dinner on your own or exploring a city by yourself can help you become comfortable in yourself. People watching is a great past time and a great way to better understand and observe the local culture.

TIP: Ask a local, such as your driver, guide, or even a hotel staff member for some of the best local tips on where to explore, eat and drink.

Improve your language skills

What better way to learn a language than to be thrown in the deep end? When you’re with a friend or fellow native speakers, you are more likely to chat with one another than to try and strike up a conversation with a local. Travelling solo will help you practice the new language and learn a lot faster!

TIP: Try to learn some basics on an App or with a pocket size book that you can carry with you as a reference point on your trip.
