Local Immersion in Arezzo, Tuscany

Arezzo is a city in Eastern Tuscany of Etruscan origin, as evidenced by the findings of the bronze statue of the Chimera. The city is home to many great artists, great wine and delicious food, as well as stunning views from the Medicean Fortress.

We speak with local Arezzo guide, Debora, about some of the must-do’s in this authentic Tuscan town.

What is the most unique aspect of your city?

Arezzo is an authentic Tuscan city where you can find a true local atmosphere. Those who come can live like the local people. For example, if you go to a restaurant it is difficult to find a ‘touristic’ menu, so you really eat how and what we eat!

What sights do you think are often missed by travellers and are a must see?

Arezzo is not as well-known as other places in Tuscany, but there is much to discover and see. The Mudas museum, Vasari home, our artisan tradition, our countryside with its castles, parish churches and spectacular views are just some ideas to get you started.

Where would you suggest going if you want an authentic local experience?

Arezzo and the surrounding area are the perfect opportunity for a hidden and an authentic Tuscan city, without crowds, where you can breathe the original Tuscan atmosphere.

Visit the Antique Fair Market for a trip through history. Held on the first Sunday of the month, and the previous Saturday, you can stroll through the old streets and squares losing yourself between antique furniture, old books, jewellery, watches, bobbin and needle lace, andprints, as well as modern and vintage objects. It is the first and the largest Antique Market in Italy, started in 1968 thanks to Ivan Bruschi, an antiquarian from Arezzo.

Witness the Joust of Saracen: The Giostra del Saracino is a medieval historical re-enactment that takes place in Arezzo, in Piazza Grande, twice a year, the first Sunday in September in daylight and the last Saturday in June in the evening. The four districts of the city participate in the event: Porta del Foro, Porta Santo Spirito, Porta Sant’Andrea and Porta Crucifera. The jousters, two per Quartiere, challenge each other by launching at full speed to mark with the tip of the spear the poster held by the Buratto (a spring-loaded metal puppet). It is a re-enactment that excites the city of Arezzo with music, colours, and fanfare.

What day trips outside of the city shouldn’t be missed?

Cortona, even it doesn’t need introduction!

Also visit the Casentino area with the Poppi castle and Romana parish church, and the town of Stia with the Arte della Lana museums located in the complex of the woollen mill of Stia. This is where “il Panno del Casentino” was born – a typical cloth used for coats, like in the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”.
