Delft
Take a train trip to this picturesque city just one hour outside Amsterdam’s cosmopolitan bustle. Delft is world-renowned for its ceramics and as the historical seat of the royal House of Orange. The city counts the painter Johannes Vermeer, whose work is liberally populated with images of Delftian streets and homes, and the scientist Antony Leeuwenhoek among its notable former residents, and both are buried there in the ‘Oude Kerk’ (Old Church).
The Hague
Not to be neglected, The Hague is reachable by train just one hour from Amsterdam. Its storied streets and buildings have hosted the governing body of the Netherlands since 1588, despite multiple wars and fluctuating borders, and the United Nations houses its International Court of Justice in the Peace Palace here. The city is also the site of the Maurithuis art museum, where other treasures of the Dutch Golden Age are exhibited.
