The Grand Wine Tour Series: Marisa Cuomo

Cantine di Marisa Cuomo is one of Southern Italy’s premier wineries. It is famous for its “extreme wines” due to the steep terraces where the vineyards grow, and for recuperating native grape varieties with a thousand-year-old history.

Deep into the Amalfi Coast the village of Furore tenaciously clings, in scattered pieces, to the steep cliffside that dramatically drops into the Mediterranean Sea. Furore, which means fury in English, is not a place for the faint of heart. In fact, it is known as the Divina Costiera – Divine Coast – because plenty of courage, and a foolhardy belief in the luck of the Divine, is needed to dig a life out of this unforgiving landscape. It is an extreme territory, full of extreme beauty, which naturally means home to extreme wines.

It is this superlative terroir that Andrea Ferraioli gifted to his wife, Marisa Cuomo, on their wedding night 30 years ago. Andrea comes from a long line of local winemakers and he wanted to continue the customs of his native land; however, the terraced vineyards and gardens planted in patches of land stolen from the cliffside were never going to be able to keep pace with the sweeping vineyard landscapes of other wine regions in Italy. Which is why, in 1980, he chose to take over and consolidate the Gran Furor Divina Costiera brand and begin focusing on recuperating native vines.

It was around this time that he met his future wife, Marisa, who shared a similar passion for the Furore terroir and had an expert knowledge of winemaking. The perfect marriage was born, literally. Over the past thirty years, the couple has been steadfast in their dedication to the unique terroir of Furore. Marisa Cuomo uses exclusively local grape varieties and makes an award-winning range of nine labels. Their flagship label is the world-famous Furore Bianco Fiorduva, a bright golden-yellow wine that tastes of salty breeze and sweet apricots.
