The Grand Wine Tour Series: Tenuta Cocci Grifoni
Tenuta Cocci Grifoni Winery has been making family wines since 1933. The winery is deeply embedded in the history of the Cocci Grifoni family and continues to be with the fourth-generation of Cocci Grifoni women leading the winery.
Nestled in the hills of the Marche region, Tenuta Cocci Grifoni is a family-run winery that has been making wine for nearly 100 years. What was born as a family country residence, has developed into a world-renowned wine estate that makes terroir-driven wines from native grapes and upholds the principles of sustainable agriculture.
Their flagship label Colle Vecchio Offida DOCG Pecorino is made from the “Mother Vineyard” of original Pecorino vines planted 35 years ago. The Cocci Grifoni family has always seen themselves as stewards of the land, and so, their entire 95-hectare estate is managed following two principle tenants of sustainability. Custodianship and Tradition. Under these principles, the estate is divided into vineyards, olive groves, wheat fields, and untouched woodland to protect biodiversity.
The historical vineyards are planted with the Marche’s native grape varieties: Pecorino, Passerina and Montepulciano. It was greatly due to the passion and determination of Guido Cocci Grifoni that the Pecorino variety was preserved as part of the Italian heritage of winemaking. It was near to extinction in the 1980’s when Guido discovered a few native vines and began bringing the variety back to life. He will be long-remembered as a pioneer of white wine from the Marche. Currently, the winery is led by Paola and Marilena Cocci Grifoni, the founder’s daughters and the fourth-generation to manage the family’s land.
